Jamestown’s upgraded slaughterhouse is officially inaugurated by the mayor of Accra

The ground was broken for the building of a multipurpose slaughterhouse in Accra, which would act as a crucial hub for the processing of animals for consumption by the general public, by the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Hon. Elizabeth K.T Sackey.

The facility, which is expected to be finished in a year, includes, among other things, an offloading bay, a veterinary, changing rooms, a store, washrooms, freezing bays, a slaughtering and slamming area, a cattle lairage, an animal drinking pond, and a kraal where the animals would be kept until they were examined by a veterinary officer before being slaughtered.

The Accra mayor, who was present for the ground-breaking ceremony on Wednesday along with the Metro Coordinating Director of the AMA, Mr. Douglas N. K Annoful, and some other Assembly staff, said that once the abattoir was finished, it would ensure the production of healthy meat and public health.

In order to make sure the building being built will be suitable for its intended use, the Assembly had a number of stakeholder dialogues before the sod was cut, she said.

Regarding the possibility of Accra and Jamestown residents finding jobs, she sounded upbeat.

“Our children and siblings in our neighbourhood will receive things to do, thus we are quite serious about this work… To better their financial situations, they would all be given tasks to perform, she added.

She believed that once it was finished, the plant would position the region and return it to its former importance as a significant meat hub for the city and beyond.

Ngleshie Sei Wulomo, Nii Ayite Konko V, who was thrilled about the proposal, thanked the mayor for the idea to restore the abattoir and promised assistance for the endeavour.

Members of the Butchers Association for London Market, as well as officials from the Ngleshie-Alata Traditional Council and Ga Traditional Council, were in attendance at the occasion.
